Fundamental Interactions and Cosmology
The goal of High Energy Theory research at EPFL is to shed light on the basic mysteries in physics. These are the origin of mass scales (weak scale, vacuum energy density), the origin of flavor, the structure of fundamental forces and their possible unification, the content of the universe (the nature of dark matter, the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry) and the origin of Big Bang.
The research of Joao Penedones and his group is based on Quantum Field Theory and String Theory. The first goal is to develop better non-perturbative methods to study quantum field theories. In this context, the conformal bootstrap approach is a central tool in the research activities of the FSL. The second goal is to explore the gauge/gravity duality to investigate questions about quantum gravity.
The main scientific interest of Mikhail Shaposhnikov is a relation between particle physics, quantum field theory and cosmology. He worked on the problem of baryon number nonconservation in the early universe and baryon asymmetry.
Grand Unification Theory, electroweak symmetry breaking and the origin of the observed mass hierarchies, dark matter in cosmology, theory of the early universe, particle physics.
